"In our sport, it's not like you miss that three-point shot or the field goal and if everybody works really hard you'll get an opportunity to do that again. You should be able to do your job, that's what it's all about. "It's sort of like, for three years we've been building, knowing we can count on an individual and now it's a whole different dynamic. "You're used to having a really good anchor in the end of your lineup and now you're putting someone in who has basically done exhibition for you. "I think the fact that Taylor was out, it really upset the apple cart," he said. Losing a critical cog not only hurt the Chippewas in a tangible sense, but from a mental one too, Reighard said. The Chippewas lost senior captain Taylor Noonan to an injury two days before the Illinois meet and there is no word on when, or if, she will return. They scored 193.475 against the Illini, posting a 47.450 on beam, which was more than a point under what they scored in vault, floor exercise or uneven bars.Ĭoncentration and precision are critical on beam, Reighard said, and that's where the Chippewas have been lacking. The Chippewas opened the season with a victory over Division III Wisconsin Eau Claire, before falling last week to Illinois. We just have to be one-10th better than our opponents." Whether it's a 196 (team score) or a 194, in this meet, it really doesn't matter. And we have to take care business within our own conference. "In gymnastics in the MAC, we don't meet each opponent twice," said Reighard, who has guided the Chippewas to a record five consecutive league championships. Adding to his concern is the fact that the Chippewas (1-1) have not performed up to expectations in their first two competitions. The matchup with Eastern Michigan is critical, Reighard said, because it's CMU's Mid-American Conference opener. "In my estimation, this is kind of do-or-die," CMU coach Jerry Reighard said as he prepared his team for Saturday night's tri-meet with Eastern Michigan and Seattle Pacific at McGuirk Arena. Maybe not for the Central Michigan gymnastics team. Too early in the season for a must-win?
